He said that Kandinsky was making black squares long before Serra. Who should care about this anymore, do you care about it? he asked me. </p> <p>Malevich always comes to my mind when I think of the black square. And so I brought him up. I thought I was correct. But then I found the work he was talking about. Kandinsky does have a black square. Not just any chance alignment, studies show the stars in this cluster to be physically related, meaning they move across the sky in the same direction, at the same rate. Chances of this alignment are roughly 1 and 500,000. </p> <p>When you look to the winter night sky from the northern hemisphere of Earth, there will be no question of to which cluster I am bestowing this prestige. In Greek mythology, the stars are referred to as the Seven Sisters: daughters of Atlas, a God who holds the heavens over his shoulders. The bible refers to them as Khima (Amos 5:8) and in ancient islamic literature, they are known as <span><em>al-Thurayya. </em>But today, the stars are most commonly known as Pleiades.</span></p> <p>For a million years, we have tried to bottle the essence of the seven star cluster and extract its mystery. Trust me, pin pointing Pleiades’s story has been no walk in the park. But in 1990, something strange occurred. The pattern of seven dots appeared again in the form of a birth mark on the back of a baby girl born in the month of April, to two proud parents of Irish and Swedish decent.</p> <p>Her name was Quigley, but to say she was from out of this world, would be a gross overstatement. In fact, her origins laid somewhere between Wilmar and Golden Valley, Minnesota. Her childhood consisted of experiences any normal 20th century female would have. She played dress up and hop scotch, and ran through sprinklers with neighbour kids in the yard. She loved her dolls, her blanket, and most of all singing “Baby Baluga.” Soon, a great love emerged between the girl, sound, and silence. The 36 participants were composed of willing men, women, couples, dogs, and a panda. A Unity Ceremony signifies two or more beings becoming one in modern western weddings. With conducting this ceremony I am not aiming to make any political statements or talk about the gentrification of Market Street. I aim to talk about human connection. Participants were sent our photo, at 3.5 x 5 inches, to mark the occasion. This record serves as a memento, one to help them remember a feeling of connection, real and falsified.
